Demolition of Iconic Silver Water Tower on Thompson Street Commences March 4th
Decatur, Texas — The City of Decatur is announcing the commencement of the demolition of the aged
150,000- gallon silver water tower located on Thompson Street. The demolition is scheduled to begin
on Monday, March 4th, 2024 and is expected to be completed within six (6) weeks.
The iconic water tower, dating back to the 1960s, has been a landmark in our community for decades.
Originally purchased and used to meet the needs of development at the time, it has faithfully
served its purpose. However, as part of our ongoing infrastructure improvements, it is now
necessary to remove the aging structure.
In its place, the city has erected a state-of-the-art, brand new 1,000,000-gallon Elevated Storage
Tank, located conveniently across the street. This modern tank will ensure the continued
reliability and efficiency of our water supply system for years to come. The new tower also boasts
public safety training props along with a safe home f some of the city’s most critical
communication infrastructure.
During the demolition process, residents and businesses in the vicinity of Thompson Street may
experience temporary closures of streets to ensure the safety of the demolition personnel. There
will be no disruption in water utility as this tower is already decommissioned. We kindly ask for
your patience and cooperation during this period.
Mayor Mike McQuiston expressed gratitude for the service of the old water tower and excitement for
the future improvements, stating, "While we bid farewell to a piece of our city's history, we also
welcome the progress and enhanced infrastructure that the new Elevated Storage Tank represents.
This is a significant step forward for our community."
The city administration encourages residents with any questions or concerns regarding the
demolition process to contact the Public Works Department at 940-393-0260.
We thank the community for their understanding and cooperation as we work to enhance the
infrastructure with the City of Decatur.
